Writers Retreats in Mendocino, California

Most people know Blair House for its connection to Murder, She Wrote, as the fictional home of writer–detective Jessica Fletcher. But beyond television lore, Mendocino holds an unusually high concentration of creatively inspired people—a place with a rare ability to stir up magic. This retreat was born from a desire to contribute to that spirit, adding our own chapter to the town’s legacy as a haven for artists and writers.

Our inaugural Blair House Writers Retreat took place in June 2025, welcoming four talented and diverse writers for two weeks of creative immersion. Participants engaged in inspiring workshops led by accomplished poet Ollie Anastasia and activist–writer Soma Sara, honing current projects and sparking new ideas. Meals were beautifully prepared by London-based chef Emily Leah, adding warmth and nourishment to each day.

During the retreat, we ventured on local excursions to connect with Mendocino’s stunning landscape and vibrant community, and hosted a hands-on lino cut workshop at the Mendocino Art Center, enriching the creative experience.

The week culminated in a public reading at Valerie, where our writers shared the fruits of their time in Mendocino.
